Winter will soon be upon us and at the Barnsdale Leisure Club, we know the struggles we all go through to stay motivated during the long, cold and miserable months ahead.
You get home in the evening just as the night draws in and all you want to do is dive into your bed, close the curtains, and eat as much comfort food as you can.
The cold weather, short days and slowed metabolism kills the urge to do any kind of workout and, slowly but surely, that lean summer body you strived so hard for disappears before your eyes.
So what can you do to keep motivated this winter?
The key problem every single one of us has in winter is that we have no set goals to strive for.
In the months leading up to summer, we will always see a massive influx of members in the Barnsdale Leisure Club as everyone tries to chisel up their abdominals and cut down on that excessive winter fat.
So we recommend that you create a firm fitness goal and keep it in mind each and every time you work out. This could be anything from trying to run a brutal 26-mile marathon or simply that you would like to improve your flexibility and touch your toes!
Goal setting should always be realistic – you don’t want to aim for something that you will never hit, as this will completely diminish your motivation.

With winter comes the change from beautiful sunshine to cold, bleak, frosty days. During these winter months, it is important that we can be as flexible as we can with our sessions.
Leisure Club manager Tom Fletcher explains: “I spend my week looking forward to my big ride. Saturday finally comes round and I pull open the curtain like an excited child at Christmas and in true British style it’s hammering it down with rain. Now every single one of us, including me, will have seen the gloom and thought “well, sod it, I’ll get that leftover cake out of the fridge and that can be my exercise for the day!”
But Tom and his team suggest a different approach – and one that leisure club membership at Barnsdale gives you the opportunity to try for yourself.
“So, we may not be able to cycle because of the weather, but as members, you can do something a little different instead. Why not pop to the gym and try a studio cycling class instead,” suggests Tom.
Studio cycle classes are more interval-based and will help you keep your fitness up over the winter months. The change in sessions will also help you burn off more fat and will help you keep you mind focused and on track.
