Local Activities

Things to do in Rutland

If you’re looking for places to visit with great shopping and fun activities for all the family, the county of Rutland really does have it all.

Known as the ‘county of good taste’, you’ll not have to look for long to discover incredible eating experiences and unique offerings. And, in addition to its vast array of home-produced food and drink, Rutland is also synonymous with water sports and nature activities including birdwatching and animal reserves.

It’s Latin motto ‘multum in parvo’ means much in little and that is definitely a fitting tribute to the UK’s smallest county with some of the LARGEST accolades, including the 10 metre ichthyosaur fossil found at Rutland Water which is the largest ever found in the UK!

Our History

The history of Rutland Hall Hotel

Rutland Hall is steeped in rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was originally built as a family hunting lodge.

As luck would have it, following years under different ownerships, Barnsdale Hall Hotel (as it was known) found itself sited right on the perimeter of Rutland Water, when this man-made lake was created in the mid 1970s. Shortly after, the timeshare model was adopted bringing with it the creation of wooden lakeside lodges built throughout the 70 acre grounds.

In 2020 the current owners, the Patel family, bought and rebranded the resort and have continued to invest heavily in its development. A full refurbishment of the main Hall, all hotel rooms and the restaurant has been completed and a new 500 capacity venue space has recently been opened, with many more developments planned.
